UTSA faces New Mexico in first-ever bowl game

UTSA Roadrunners

It’s a big moment for UTSA. The Roadrunners have never been to a bowl game in the history of the program – never mind that the program began in 2011. But they made it; they take on the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday at the New Mexico Bowl.

The Roadrunners are a scrappy little 6-6 team this season, with a first-year head coach and impressive wins over Rice, Middle Tennessee, and North Texas. They’ve got a well-balanced offense with a quarterback who rarely throws an interception. They’ve also got a pretty good rush defense, ranked 52nd in the nation with only 158 yards per game.

The Lobos had a less-than-stellar start to this season, with losses in three of their first five games. But then they kicked it into gear with five straight wins (four of which were conference victories). They ended the season 9-4 with a 21-point victory over Wyoming. They’ve also got a great offense, especially with their running backs. New Mexico is the top rushing team in the nation with 361 yards per game.

The Roadrunners’ defense may be able to stop the Lobos, but it’s unlikely they will often enough to win this game. But then, both teams have surprised us this season.
