A 76-year-old woman from Westchester County died after contracting the West Nile virus, health officials announced Wednesday.
The Yonkers resident, who had “significant underlying medical conditions,” died on Aug. 22, WABC reported.
She was the first county resident to be diagnosed with the illness this year, Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler said in a statement.
“The overwhelming majority of people who get the virus do recover, and we generally have only a few cases each year,” Amler noted.
One Westchester resident last year contracted the bug, while there were four cases in 2018, LoHud reported.
Symptoms of the virus resemble the flu or food poisoning and can include high fever, body aches and gastrointestinal issues, the CDC said.
The CDC said the most effective way to prevent the virus is to protect oneself from mosquitoes.
“Use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, treat clothing and gear, and take steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors,” the agency said.
Trump rips China after Post exclusive on COVID-19 cover-up
President Trump said he expresses his anger whenever he speaks about Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Beijing’s failure to contain the coronavirus pandemic and allowing it to spread about the world, killing nearly 200,000 Americans.
The president was asked about a New York Post exclusive report on findings from the House Foreign Affairs Committee that the COVID-19 pandemic may have been prevented if the Chinese Communist Party hadn’t covered up the severity of the outbreak.
“I say it every time I speak. And I’m angry at him [Xi] because they could have stopped this, they could have stopped it easily,” Trump said on “Fox & Friends,” referring to the Chinese president.
“They stopped it from going back further into their country. But they didn’t stop it from going out to the rest of the world, of which we’re apart. They didn’t stop it from coming here in Europe and all over the world – 188 countries to be exact. They did not stop it. Countries are devastated,” the president added.
The panel’s 96-page report, obtained first by the Post, found China destroyed evidence, hid public health information and suppressed doctors and journalists who tried to sound alarms about the pandemic after the first cases were reported in the city of Wuhan in December.
It also accused the World Health Organization of “parroting” Beijing propaganda.
Trump was also asked about a Reuters report of a video released by the Chinese air force showing nuclear-equipped bombers carrying out an attack on a US Air Force base in Guam.
Host Brian Kilmeade asked the president how he would counter the threat from China.
“Well, I won’t be telling you that. They know they’ve got some big problems, OK, if they play around. If they want to play the game, they’ve got a big problem,” Trump said.
“You’ll just have to follow that one on the news, Brian, but you’ll be the first to get there and you’ll probably be the first to know,” he said.
The video was released on Saturday by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force account as China continued a second day of military drills near Taiwan, a territory China claims as its own.
Democrats impeachment ploy to block SCOTUS pick will backfire
President Trump on Monday predicted that Democrats moving to impeach him in an effort to block a Senate vote to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would backfire and Republicans would win back the House.
The president was asked during an interview on “Fox & “Friends” about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying that Democrats have options to stop a Senate vote on Ginsburg’s replacement and wouldn’t rule out impeachment.
“I think my numbers will go up, I think we’ll win the entire election, I think we will win back the House. I think we’re going to win the House. I really do. I think we’re going to win the House anyway,” Trump said.
Trump expressed surprise that the Democrats are threatening to impeach him for doing what he has the right to do.
“So I heard yesterday if I do it they’re going to impeach me. So they’re impeaching me for doing what constitutionally I have to do … I think when we win the election then we win all elections if they do that,” Trump said.
He said the last time Democrats impeached him didn’t work out for them.
“And, you know, they even said that if I do it, they’re going to impeach me. Well, they impeached me for a perfect phone call to say congratulations to the president of Ukraine,” the president said.
“And then they said the call was different than that. They made up – shifty Schiff made up a call -and he said horrible things that everyone thought I made that call but that wasn’t it. Thank goodness it was transcribed perfectly,” he said, referring to Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee that ran point on the impeachment efforts.
Pelosi, in an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” said wouldn’t rule out seeking impeachment proceedings against Trump or Attorney General William Barr.
“Well, we have our options. We have arrows in our quiver that I’m not about to discuss right now, but the fact is we have a big challenge in our country,” the California Democrat said.
“This president has threatened to not even accept the results of the election with statements that he and his henchmen have made,” she continued.
Shortly after his hit on “Fox & Friends,” the president tweeted, “@SenateGOP Crazy Nancy Pelosi wants to Impeach me if I fulfill my Constitutional Obligation to put forth a Nominee for the vacated seat on the United States Supreme Court. This would be a FIRST, even crazier than being Impeached for making a PERFECT phone call to Ukrainian Pres.”
Two slashed minutes apart in West Village, suspect arrested
An East Harlem man was nabbed for allegedly slashing two people, including a jogger, across the face minutes apart in Manhattan late Sunday, authorities said.
A 39-year-old woman was jogging at West 13th Street and Sixth Avenue around 10 p.m. when someone pushed her from behind, according to police sources.
When she turned around, the attacker slashed her across the right side of the face, the sources said.
The suspect bolted, and the woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center.
About 15 minutes later, the alleged assailant struck again on Eighth Avenue near West 13th Street — slicing a 59-year-old man across the face.
He was taken to the same hospital. Neither victim suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police searched the area with someone who witnessed the second attack and nabbed the alleged knifeman, Khari Walker, 25, the sources said.
Walker, of East Harlem, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and harassment, according to cops.
In an unrelated incident around 8:15 a.m. Monday, a man in his 30s was stabbed three times during a dispute inside the Far Rockaway–Mott Avenue station.
He was taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
