Among Us Facing Hacker Issues With Growing Success

Among Us is a game that doesn’t really require a high-end device or gaming skills. It is a basic ‘Whodunnit’ kind of game that relies on the wits of crewmates and impostors. Generally, people play the game to relax with friends after a long day of work or make a boring day interesting.

The public lobbies in Among Us can be problematic for various reasons. A lot of times, small groups of friends switch their private lobby to public in order to fill up the room. While the random players aren’t aware of what is happening, the group of friends can collude and ruin the experience for the rest. They can reveal the impostor or make sure the crewmates aren’t able to capture the impostor if they belong to the group.

However, this is not the only type of cheating that is rife in Among Us. The sudden success of the game has also attracted many negative elements.

Hacking plagues Among Us lobbies

Players have been constantly trying to contact officials through Reddit and Twitter to report incidents of hacking. Hacks for Among Us started surfacing on the internet as soon as the game blew up. These allow the crewmates to identify the impostors. Some hacks also remove the kill cooldown for impostors, while some allow them to kill all crewmates right after spawning.

Such dishonest methods completely ruin the spirit of the game for players who want to have a genuine experience.

Kotaku reached out to programmer and business lead Forest Willard from InnerSloth, the developers of Among Us, to enquire about the studio’s plans to deal with the growing hacking menace. Willard reiterated how they dropped plans for Among Us 2 in order to focus on the current game.

One of the areas they want to deal with is the hacking problem. Therefore, they are working on a larger team of moderators as well as an account system.

Since the current development team working behind the game is really small, the changes might take a while to arrive.

Willard said, “Also getting help with making the servers better at detecting and blocking hacks. And investigating client-side hack prevention as well. I’m sort of scrambling to get all the right people in place, but I’m attacking it from multiple angles so it can get better in many ways hopefully all at once.”

Therefore, even though players might have to bear the hacking problem for a while, they can be assured that it will soon be addressed. As for the sneaky friends, players can just kick them out of the circle for ruining the experience.
