Biden calls Hunter 'smartest guy I know' in virtual event with Oprah

Joe Biden is shrugging off a torrent of new allegations linking him to his family’s corrupt business practices, calling his son “the smartest guy I know” — as his brother refuses to take questions on the matter.

Speaking during a surprise appearance Wednesday at a virtual voter mobilization event hosted by Oprah Winfrey, the former vice president made the comment while discussing how he was convinced to join the 2008 Democratic presidential ticket with by President Obama.

“I told him I didn’t want to do it. This is public knowledge now. I thought I could help him more as a US senator,” the 2020 Democrat told Winfrey and her other special guest, 92-year-old Mildred Madison, a Michigan resident who drove over 600 miles to vote after not receiving her absentee ballot.

Biden went on to say that Obama convinced him to go home and reconsider after talking to his family.

Listing who he sought out for counsel, he mentioned his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, his mother, Catherine “Jean” Biden, his late son Beau Biden “and I had my son Hunter, who’s the smartest guy I know.”

Biden did not elaborate on his point about his son, instead turning to his mother Jean, whom he says convinced him to change his mind on joining the ticket.

“She said, ‘Joey, first man in history who’s able to be elected president as an African American. He says that he needs you to win Pennsylvania and other states and you told him No?’” he remarked while quoting his mother.

“I said, ‘Oh mom, what are you doing to me?’ I said yes I will, and so I picked up the phone and called Barack, because my mom, like you, wasn’t about to take no for an answer. It was about an obligation, about what you are supposed to do,” he continued.

Biden’s mention of Hunter comes one day after his brother, Jim Biden, refused to answer questions when approached by Fox News outside his home about his family’s overseas business ventures.

Asked by the reporter Wednesday if the former vice president had knowledge of their business dealings, the 2020 Democrat’s brother was quick to shut any chance of a conversation down.

“I don’t want to comment about anything,” Jim Biden told the network.

Asked if he cared to answer questions, he responded, “Nope.”
