MURFREESBORO, Tenn—Boyd-Buchanan played Webb School in the DII-A semifinals Wednesday afternoon.
It was a scrappy affair as both teams dug deep to try to get the win., with the Bucs eventually moving on to Thursday’s championship match against Lausanne with a 1-0 blanking of the Feet.
The first half was fairly even—with both teams creating chances and putting shots on goal. Neither team was able to convert, however, which set up an intense nail-bitter for the second half.
The second period of play opened up in the worst way possible for Boyd—with Webb earning a penalty kick just 10 seconds in. Keeper Matthew Thomae put out the fire, however, with a dangling left boot that pushed Chris Douglas’s shot just wide.
From there on Boyd began to pull away—outshooting Webb 9-4 in the second half.
The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when Andrew Pollard put the Buccaneers up 1-0. Boyd immediately dropped back into a more defensive shape and looked to hold onto its lead.
Striker Mills Wood had a few chances on the counter given that Webb were pushing men forward to find a goal. Boyd were never able to find a second, but it didn’t matter as one goal was enough to see them through to the final.
Boyd-Buchanan will face Lausanne Thursday at 6:30pm central time for the state championship.
