Chris Bosh wants NCAA to mandate Election Day break for student-athletes

NBA champion Chris Bosh penned a story for The Players’ Tribune on Tuesday outlining why he believes all NCAA student-athletes should be given Election Day off to vote. He said the NCAA will vote Wednesday on a proposal mandating coaches excuse players from practice and don’t schedule games on Election Day.

Bosh, who attended Georgia Tech before his decorated pro career, recalled his parents taking him to Selma, Ala., when he was a child to teach him about the civil rights movement. Peaceful Black protesters were attacked by police at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma while marching for equal voting rights in 1965.

The visit showed Bosh the importance of exercising one’s right to vote and inspired his high-profile push to clear Election Day for student-athletes.

“Every time I go to vote, I think back to those impromptu history lessons I got as a kid,” wrote Bosh, “and I remember that, you know what…? People got bit up by dogs and knocked out by lead pipes so I can do this. Folks who did nothing wrong were thrown in jail.”

Bosh considers the typical student-athlete schedule in which college kids are asked to train hard and balance a full course load to be a burden on being able to cast a vote on Election Day.

While mail-in ballots are becoming an increasingly standard form of voting across the U.S., a special day for voting would also encourage student-athletes to head to the polls when they otherwise might not.

A group of student-athletes reached out to Bosh in the spring to ask him to give the proposal a boost.

“One thing that came up again and again was that this proposal isn’t about getting ‘a day off’ or anything like that,” Bosh wrote. “These young people want to take action. They want to use this day to help make voting more of a priority, and to assist people who may not otherwise be able to vote.”

WATCH: When a Car Cover Got the Better of Cole Pearn at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Back in 2016, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway race in March was a wet affair. When the race was halted due to the rainy weather, former NASCAR driver, Cole Pearn, found out that it was windy the hard way.

At the time, Pearn was Crew Chief to the #78 car housing Martin Truex Jr. Apparently, when he tried to get the cover on the car, the wind blew it right off and it practically smothered him. Eventually, he was rescued by the rest of the crew, though there were plenty of laughs.

The Furniture Row Racing driver enjoyed a decent qualifying session, with 10th on the grid. In race conditions, that was the best that the #78 car could muster up, as Truex Jr. ended up 11th fastest.

What else happened at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2016?

While all this was going on, Kurt Busch took pole at the Kobalt 400. Unfortunately, he could not make it last and Brad Keselowski emerged as the winner. The pole man eventually ended his race down in 9th place at the rain-interrupted race.

Initially, the skies were clear in Nevada, when Kurt Busch led the pack. However, sometime during the race, there were various reports of debris scattered all over the track. They didn’t come from the cars themselves, but 30 mph gusts of wind blew them onto the track.

Soon, the rain came pouring down and the first caution flag waved at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Joey Logano soon took the lead, but teammate Brad Keselowski looked very threatening.

Then, more debris blew onto the backstretch and forced a second caution on Lap 99. After a while, Keselowski picked up a penalty for speeding on the pit road and dropped way down the order.

Disaster struck, as the windy conditions led to a dust storm southeast of the track. The good news was that it soon passed, and normal operations resumed, with 64 laps to go.

After some more stopping and restarting, Kyle Busch found himself in the lead with 35 laps to go. Busch got a good start and began to pull away, only for Keselowski to reel him back in and pass him in the dying laps of the race.

Lakers Center Dwight Howard Details His Mindset While Playing Alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis

The Los Angeles Lakers have a chance to close out the series after taking a 3-1 lead vs the Nuggets. Heading into Game 4, they were completely outplayed by Denver in the previous game. But one change from head coach Frank Vogel turned the tides in LA’s favor.

It was the addition of veteran Dwight Howard to the starting lineup. Howard was getting into constant foul trouble in the first three games, but Game 4 was different. Dwight committed only 2 fouls in the entire game.

He also grabbed 11 rebounds, including 6 offensive boards! The team fed off his energy and defeated the Nuggets with a score of 114-108. Before Game 5 matchup, Howard shared his views on how the Lakers can finish off the Nuggets.

“Go out there and dominate, from 1st quarter to 4th quarter. Don’t worry about the refs, don’t worry about missed shots, just go out there and do what we do best, play Laker basketball and get a good win.”

Dwight also mentioned what it feels like to start alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the Lakers.

“Just try to go in and be a star in my role. Play great defense, get as many rebounds as I can, control the paint and make sure to take pressure off the rest of the guys by being active and communicating.”

It seems like Howard is finally fulfilling his role on the Lakers’ roster. Prior to the playoffs, Howard was giving quality minutes to the team and was a defensive beast. However, after the hiatus, Dwight struggled for a bit, but he has finally found his groove.

What’s next for the Los Angeles Lakers?

Right now, the biggest task for the Lakers is to stop Denver in its tracks. The Nuggets have already proved a 3-1 deficit doesn’t mean anything to them as they have already overcame that problem twice in this postseason.

In fact, in the Western Semis, they were down big on multiple occasions in elimination games. But Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic always carried them out of the slump. All things considered, the Lakers need to finish Denver off in Game 5 itself. Otherwise, this Nuggets team can gain momentum and cause problems for Lakers.

What do you think? Who will be victorious in Game 5 of the WCF? The Lakers or the Nuggets?

Xbox: Titles Users Could Get Hold of Thanks to the Bethesda Acquisition

Microsoft sent the world in a state of frenzy when it announced the acquisition of ZeniMax Media. The deal cost Microsoft an astounding $7.5 billion. This adds a range of renowned franchises under the Xbox game pass that stands as the USP for Microsoft’s next-gen console.

Bethesda, a subsidiary of ZeniMax Media, is the studio behind some of the biggest franchises in gaming. However, the studio has had a mixed bag of fortunes in the last few years. But with Microsoft as support, Bethesda may be able to go back to making drool-worthy titles.

Additionally, Microsoft now owns franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein, and Dishonored, all of which will be added to the Xbox game pass. The game pass has over fifteen million subscribers, and to cater to their needs is Microsoft’s central idea.

This has shifted the entire debate on console exclusives in Xbox’s favor. This comes as good news for Xbox patrons as they will get access to the following reputed franchises.

The following titles will make their way to Xbox as a part of the acquisition

Elder Scrolls 6 coming for both Xbox and PC

While Bethesda has confirmed Elder Scrolls 6, we are still in the dark about the release date. Fans have the highest of expectations from the upcoming title since Elder V is considered one of the finest RPGs ever.

Bethesda had dropped the teaser trailer at E3 2018 and heaps of rumors have surfaced since then. However, with Elder Scrolls Online doing pretty well and devs preoccupied with other projects, it’ll be a few months at least until we get a formal update.

The title will be exclusive for Xbox and PC, giving the PlayStation a fair share of competition.

Doom Eternal

The game will be added to the game pass on October 1 for consoles. The game released in March for Xbox One and PS4 and is the fifth series in the id Software’s domain. A new-gen version for both Xbox Series X and PS5 is planned as Bethesda promises to honor all its previous agreements.

The game is set a few years after the previous title (2016). Doom Slayer again is at the nucleus of the game.

The immersive gameplay and the campaign design in the game have been highly praised. Moreover, the game’s focus on combat mechanics and soundtracks received world acclaim. But the elaborate way of storytelling has received a lot of criticism.

Xbox game pass subscribers are in for a treat as the game will b available there in a few days.

Dishonored 2

The game is a sequel to the original title that released in 2012. Players can choose between two protagonists, each with unique supernatural abilities. Emily and Corvo Attano have abilities that can also be dropped as the game progresses.

The choice of two protagonists also means that there are different ways of pursuing the same objective and mission. Dishonored 2 got a lot of positive feedback after launch. The game was praised for its gameplay and breathtaking portrayal of stealth and combat, along with the design of the quests and objectives.

Bethesda as a studio has long been criticized for elaborate methods of storytelling, often labeled monotonous. However, Dishonoured 2 only impressed and was awarded Best Action/Adventure Game at the Game Awards in 2016.

So, it will definitely lure more players to a game pass subscription whenever it is added to the list.

Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is the first multiplayer game in the series and gives the players the freedom to explore the open world. The game is set in the year 2102, almost twenty-five years after the nuclear war that destroyed the entire civilization.

As good as the visuals are, the campaign of the game has been called purposeless. But the gameplay and its features make it a must-play, and hopefully, the Xbox game pass subscribers will be able to get their hands on the title in no time.

Bethesda hasn’t been as successful recently as it was a few years back. But Microsoft will enable its devs to spend more time creating titles that promise to be bigger and better.

The Xbox game pass, along with the new titles, definitely sounds like a treat for the Xbox users. It also is a way of luring new players into building a relationship with the Xbox ecosystem. Only time will tell how this deal pans out for Microsoft. Stay tuned for more updates!
