Eagles add Josh McCown to practice squad at 41-year-old

The Eagles went very veteran for their QB depth this season.

Josh McCown, who came out of retirement last season to sign with Philadelphia, will become the oldest practice squad player in NFL history at the age of 41, according to ESPN.

It’ll be a pretty sweet gig for the No. 4 QB on the Eagles. Playing behind Carson Wentz, Nate Sudfeld, and first-round pick Jalen Hurts, McCown will get to live at home in Texas, telecommute to practices, and pull down $12,000 a week for the privilege.

According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, the decision to bring back the former Jets signal-caller was due, in part, to Wentz’s appreciation of the elder QB, having bonded under his tutelage last season. What McCown brings to the table — he’s played for nine teams over a 16-year journeyman career — even as a No. 4 is inarguable.

With practice squad expanded to 16 players this season over coronavirus concerns, keeping McCown around — in a manner of speaking, as he’ll remain offsite — was an easy call.

“The Eagles love Josh, and he loves them,” his agent Mike McCartney told King.

McCown only threw five passes during the 2019 regular season, but was forced into action early in the Eagles’ playoff game against the Seahawks after Carson Wentz left with an injury. He completed 18 of 24 passes for 174 yards in a 17-9 loss to the Seahawks.
