Early voting signals high turnout for 2020 presidential election

With weeks to go before the 2020 presidential election, 22 million Americans have already cast their votes, with Democrats turning out early by a wide margin.

Democrats have outnumbered Republicans at the polls so far by a two to one margin. The ballots cast so far represent 16 percent of all those made in the 2016 presidential race, according to a review by the Associated Press.

Experts predict the 2020 contest may see up to 150 million votes cast, making it the highest turnout election since 1908.

The early voting numbers may give Democrats an early advantage heading into game day. With core voters banked, the party will be able to focus its efforts on running up the numbers with harder to reach infrequent voters.

The party is also seeing good news from early absentee ballots as well. More than 75 percent of the 437,000 mailed-in ballots in Pennsylvania have been from Democrats, while half of absentees in Florida have been blue, compared to just a third Republican.

“This is all encouraging, but three weeks is a lifetime,” Democratic data strategist Tom Bonier told the Associated Press, saying it was important for the party not to get cocky. “We may be midway through the first quarter and Democrats have put a couple of points on the board.”
