Mayor Eric Adams on Friday appointed a former official in ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration to be his new deputy mayor for strategic initiatives.
Ana Almanzar, who worked as the chief of staff in Cuomo’s nonprofit unit between 2014 and 2020, was officially tapped as one of Adams’ top deputies at a City Hall press conference Friday morning.
“For more than a decade, Ana Almanzar has built bridges between nonprofits and government,” Hizzoner said, adding that she has “shown her ability to ‘Get Stuff Done’ for New Yorkers.”
“Moving to New York City from the Dominican Republic, she has turned her American Dream into a reality, graduating from CUNY and fighting for Latino rights.
“Ana continues this administration’s tradition of leadership by strong women — especially strong women of color — and I am thrilled to have her as our new deputy mayor for strategic initiatives.”

Before taking on the role in Adams’ administration, Almanzar most recently worked for the Big Apple’s Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.
Prior to that, she was working for Cuomo’s New York state director of nonprofits.
“I bring with me many years of experience in the private, public, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors, which have prepared me to take on the role of deputy mayor for strategic initiatives with great excitement,” Almanzar said.

“My journey from Las Palmas-Santo Domingo to City Hall has been filled with great challenges and opportunities that made me who I am and fuel my desire to help others reach their goals and dreams.”
Almanzar is set to take on the deputy mayor role early next month and will succeed the current first deputy mayor, Sheena Wright.
