Chaos in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft led the Giants to trade down with the Chicago Bears, as New York moved from the 11th-overall pick to No. 20.
With the 11th pick, the Bears selected Ohio State star QB Justin Fields.
There was speculation the Giants could select DeVonta Smith at 11, but the Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver landed with the rival Eagles after Philadelphia traded up with the Dallas Cowboys to secure the 10th pick.
In return for trading down the Giants landed the Bears’ first-round pick this year and next, a fourth in 2022 and a fifth in 2021.
It marked the first time GM Dave Gettleman has ever traded down as an NFL executive.
Smith would have been a welcome addition to a Giants offense that has floundered the past two years with quarterback Daniel Jones under center.
He led all of college football with 23 receiving touchdowns last season. He had 117 receptions for 1,856 yards.
