IPL 2023: Rajat Patidar’s absence exposed RCB’s batting and put pressure on their big three, says Tom Moody

By India Today Sports Desk: Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody has said the absence of batter Rajat Patidar exposed Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batting line-up and put huge pressure on their top-three batters. RCB finished sixth in the IPL 2023 points table.

Speaking to ESPNCcricinfo, Moody said Patidar’s absence has exposed RCB’s batting line-up and put enormous pressure on Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell. Apart from RCB’s top-three, only two of their batters managed to score over 100 runs in IPL 2023.

“RCB was challenged right from the beginning of the tournament when Patidar was made unavailable, the key figure at number three. It exposed their batting and put an enormous amount of pressure on their big three. The absence of Patidar did put a huge amount of pressure on Kohli, Maxwell and Faf, but they absorbed that pressure and played particularly well,” said Moody.

He went on to talk about Dinesh Karthik, saying he did not have a season like he’s had in the recent past. Karthik scored 140 runs in 13 matches this season, averaging 11.67, while striking at 134.61.

“The other aspect of their batting was that they didn’t seem to have the power or the finishers down the order at six and seven, which a lot of teams have had. DK [Dinesh Karthik] has done that successfully in the past, but he didn’t have a season like he has done in the recent past,” Moody added.

Moody said one can’t rely on individuals to win tournaments, insisting that it is always a team effort that wins tournaments. RCB finished with 14 points from as many games, finishing sixth in the IPL 2023 points table.

“You can’t just rely on a handful of individuals to win a tournament. It is teams that win tournaments. You get individuals that will win games, it is a classic sort of cliche. That is a perfect example of where RCB are at. They had a few individuals that could step up and blow a game away. But they had too many missing parts,” said Moody.

RCB could have qualified for the playoffs had they defeated Gujarat Titans in their final league game but were undone by a brilliant Shubman Gill century.
