"Most Incredible Things": Rafael Nadal, Roberto Bautista-Agut and Others Reminisce Spanish Davis Cup Glory

The ‘World Cup of Tennis’ or Davis Cup Finals is an international event that hosts nearly 135 nations. As a team event, the annual competition has made many incredible memories over the last 120 years. A year ago, as Spain became World Champions for the 6th time, Roberto Bautista-Agut won a million hearts.

In the middle of the last year’s finals, the 32-year-old Roberto suffered the loss of his father. As a result, he left the team to pay his final respects. Extraordinarily, the Spanish team uniquely honored Agut’s absence and made it one of the most remarkable moments in tennis. Agut’s inspirational story will be relived again in “Break Point: A Davis Cup Story” from November 26.

Team Spain had Rafael Nadal, Feliciano Lopez, Pablo Carreno Busta, Marcel Granollers, and Roberto. When the Spaniards left space in the line-up for Agut, the world felt his absence. But this wasn’t for long as ‘Bati’ returned to the team in the semi-final encounter against Great Britain. He said, “I feel very loved and supported by my teammates, friends, family and fans. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The next day, Roberto won against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime to give Spain a 1-0 lead in the finals. Before winning 7-6, 6-3, the Spaniard received heartfelt applause from the crowd. After busting Felix, Bautista-Agut jumped into the arms of his teammates.

Roberto said, “It was an amazing feeling on the court today. I was trying to do everything. I had the opportunity to play today because all the team and all the players and the rest of the team did an unbelievable effort since the first day.”

Apart from World No. 13, the Spanish great Rafael Nadal played a major role in the road to victory. The then World No. 1, Rafa also won the Davis Cup Most Valuable Player trophy, and his campaign record was 8-0. However, he too was in awe as Roberto took charge on the court. Nadal had said, “This is one of the most incredible things I had ever seen in sports.”

Spain is one of the most successful countries in tennis with six Davis Cup titles and four runner-up trophies.

Amidst the pandemic outbreak, the once-a-year tournament could not take place this year. The World Cup of Tennis will return with the same enthusiasm and etch new and powerful stories in the years to come. As of now, it is scheduled to be played between November 23-29 next year.
