NYC train station toilets could be ‘America’s best restroom’

NYC train station toilets could be 'America's best restroom'

Looking for a clean bathroom? How about trying out a train station in Queens.

The $2.8 million bathrooms at the Port’s JFK AirTrain stop in Jamaica, have been named a finalist in this year’s America’s Best Restroom Contest.

The year-old facilities for Kennedy Airport travelers come “equipped with modern designs and are nearly three times as large as the previous restrooms, with wider stalls to account for travelers’ luggage,” according to a statement heralding their official opening last October.

Visitors to the new loos are greeted by a mural of the New York City skyline by local artist Carlos Sandoval De Leon, the statement said.

Inside the human waste station, the stalls and walls are blue and gold — the official colors of both the Port Authority and state of New York, according to photos submitted for the restroom competition.

After relieving themselves, toilet-goers wash their hands using hands-free faucets and dryers shaped like airplanes.

Skeptical New Yorkers may be wary of any public transit bathroom claiming the mantle of “best.” But Port Authority officials have pledged to keep the new toilets spick and span.

“Clean bathrooms are an important aspect of travel that for too long were overlooked across our facilities; that’s changing,” Port Chairman Kevin O’Toole said last year.

“The Port Authority is committed to making investments like these at AirTrain JFK to give travelers a modern, 21st century customer experience.”

Still, the AirTrain bathroom has tough competition — including two other finalists in nearby Manhattan.

At the Kimpton Muse Hotel on 46th Street, six separate unisex bathrooms have been decorated according to six different themes: “glam,” “vain,” “rebel,” “passion,” “macho,” and “envy.”

And at Greeley Square, the 34th Street Partnership operates a public outhouse shaped like a newspaper stand in honor of the parks namesake, 19th century newspaper editor Horace Greeley.

Voting for the competition wraps up Monday, Oct. 19.
