Odell Beckham Jr. cleared for Browns return after COVID-19 scare

Odell Beckham Jr. has been cleared for liftoff.

The Browns wide receiver returned another negative COVID-19 test Saturday, according to multiple reports, giving him the green light to play Sunday against the Steelers after being sent home on Thursday feeling sick.

Due to feeling ill, Beckham needed to test negative for the virus twice in 24 hours before returning to the practice facility, in accordance with the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol.

He returned to the facility Saturday to take part in walkthroughs and meetings, according to Cleveland.com, and was expected to travel with the team to Pittsburgh.

Coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Friday that Beckham was feeling better and that his time away from the team should not affect his availability for Sunday. Beckham’s illness was not disclosed.

“He was out here Wednesday and got some good work in Wednesday,” Stefanski said. “He’s been in meetings virtually. [Pass game coordinator/wide receivers coach Chad] O’Shea is going to spend extra time with him in those meetings. If all goes according to plan for [Saturday], you spend even more time and you spend even more walkthrough time. I think there’s enough time to catch him up, barring his health.”

Having Beckham on the field will be a big boost for the 4-1 Browns as they face the 4-0 Steelers in an important AFC North showdown. The former Giants receiver was officially listed as questionable, as was Baker Mayfield with a chest injury, though the Cleveland quarterback practiced fully on Friday.
