NEW YORK — Randy Vásquez seemed wide-eyed for his first in-person Major League game this week, observing nine innings from Yankee Stadium’s dugout as a member of the club’s taxi squad. Quietly, he imagined himself on the mound, pitching in front of a packed house.
Promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill in while Domingo Germán completes his suspension, the 24-year-old Vásquez performed capably against a stacked lineup, but received little support as the Yankees’ bats were held down in a 5-1 loss to the Padres on Friday evening.

Juan Soto hit a long two-run home run into the second deck in right field off Vásquez, who is rated as the No. 12 prospect in the Yankees’ organization by MLB Pipeline. Vásquez scattered four hits over 4 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out six in an 84-pitch effort.

Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a two-run homer into the second deck in left field facing Ron Marinaccio in the sixth inning, prompting jeers (and some out-of-town cheers) from a festive sellout crowd of 46,724, arriving upon summer’s doorstep for the beginning of a holiday weekend.
The Yanks were limited to six hits over 6 1/3 innings by Padres starter Joe Musgrove, with the only run that the right-hander permitted coming on a sixth-inning Anthony Rizzo groundout.
