Actress Alaina Huffman can see the initial appeal of NXIVM.
The 40-year-old, who played Dinah Lance/Black Canary on the WB series “Smallville,” was invited several times to attend meetings by her co-star Allison Mack, who she described as “very aspirational.”
“As a young woman, 27, 28, on ‘Smallville,’ Ally was a couple of years younger than me and here she was flourishing, very well put together, a really peppy and independent woman.
“She invited me a few times to some of these events and for whatever reason, I never made it maybe because I was married and had kids and I might have had something else that grounded more than I needed that kind of grounding but I can understand the appeal,” she recently told Page Six.
Huffman has only watched one episode of the documentary series “The Vow,” which centers around NXIVM and its co-founder Keith Raniere, but is understandably eager to catch up.
She told us it was common knowledge on set that Mack, 38, was deeply involved in a self-help group and planned to move to their headquarters in Albany to live there full-time.
“She was very affirmative about that,” Huffman remembered.
Mack is currently awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges, including extortion and forced labor. On Tuesday, Raniere, 60, was sentenced to 120 years in prison for sex trafficking and other crimes.
The “Supernatural” actress was also invited to attend the group’s seminars by yet another follower, Bonnie Piesse, who is prominently featured in the HBO mini-series.
“We went out for dinner and she was like, ‘Oh, you’ve got to come to this group,’” she recalled. “I said, ‘Oh yeah, I know it from Ally.’”
Today, Huffman is based in Brooklyn after living in semi-rural conditions in Washington State with her four children.
It’s certainly in keeping with her spiritual and emotional journey, something that she has actively been working on for years. One daily practice is reciting an affirmation, swearing that it has been a hugely positive force in her life.
“For example, today’s affirmation is, ‘I am full of energy and life.’ It’s a mantra that I repeat to myself during the day and then at night I write it out ten times in my journal,” she explained.
Huffman has encouraged her Instagram followers to take part in a year of affirmations.
