On the eve of the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok, there was much movement and little certainty. The whole thing seemed to come down to three words — “trusted tech partner” — and no one I’ve spoken to seems to know what they mean.
The most recent events were set in motion on Sunday afternoon, when ByteDance announced that it had rejected Microsoft’s bid to acquire TikTok in favor of an extremely vague partnership with a 43-year-old enterprise software company. The gist seems to be that Oracle would store American TikTok users’ data and keep it secure, but the app itself would continue to be owned and operated by ByteDance.
It could also include voting control over by TikTok by its US-based investors, the New York Times reported. Oracle and Walmart are both separately negotiating for stakes in TikTok’s American business, according to CNBC, which would still stop well short of an outright sale.
And now everything hinges on whether President Trump will accept ByteDance’s offer, or follow on his threats to ban the app in the United States.
Trump’s stated reason for forcing a sale was to protect Americans from Chinese influence — either the misuse of their data, or the manipulation of TikTok for propaganda purposes. As Russell Brandom notes at The Sports Grind Entertainment, an Oracle deal might partially address the former concern, but would do nothing about the latter. Microsoft’s offer, by contrast, had attempted to solve for both. He writes:
Microsoft’s version of the deal would have severed American TikTok from Europe and Asia entirely, but Oracle’s version of the deal leaves it mostly intact. US TikTok will stay the same as Korean TikTok and Nigerian TikTok; it’s just getting an extra babysitter. That makes it less of a sale and more of a glorified hosting deal. It lets Trump say he’s solved the problem but doesn’t do much else.
Microsoft underlined this point in its official statement announcing it had not been chosen. “We would have made significant changes to ensure the service met the highest standards for security, privacy, online safety, and combatting misinformation,” the company said in its statement. “We look forward to seeing how the service evolves in these important areas.”
The implicit message is clear: we wanted to change TikTok to actually make it safe, and ByteDance said no.
In doing so, ByteDance has essentially called Trump’s bluff — wagering that he will accept the deal, reward a loyal friend in Oracle, and declare total victory. This … does not seem like a bad bet? It’s a high-stakes bet, to be sure, and one with a significant downside. It still seems entirely within the realm of possibility that TikTok in the United States as we know it will disappear. But if you’re ByteDance, and trying to make the best of an attempted mugging, it would probably look something like this.

Of course, Trump being Trump, no one knows what will happen next. Will he accept ByteDance’s offer to claim victory while actually capitulating? Will he fear the electoral consequences of banning a popular app? Will he be put off by China’s attempt to put him on the spot? Or, most optimistically, will he actually follow through on his alleged national security concerns? Needless to say, given the way in which this entire sordid episode has made a mockery of the rule of law, I’m not optimistic, but, well, hope springs eternal.
Among the people who saw through ByteDance’s revised offer was Sen. Josh Hawley, R-MO, who called on the Council for Foreign Investment in the United States to reject it.
“Any corporate shell game that leaves TikTok in the hands of ByteDance will simply perpetuate the original problem, leaving U.S. national interests and everyday users at serious risk,” he wrote. “ByteDance, as TikTok’s parent company, will continue to be subject to Chinese laws that put Americans’ data at risk. That is precisely the problem that the President’s action sought to solve, and it is that same problem that the proposed Oracle partnership leaves fully intact. In short, the proposal violates the President’s executive order.”
I reached out to Oracle to see if the company had any additional light to shed on the weekend’s events, but didn’t hear back. I imagine it is having a very busy day.

⭐Facebook ignored evidence that fake accounts were used to undermine elections around the world, according to a memo from a recently fired Facebook data scientist. The memo includes concrete examples of heads of government in Azerbaijan and Honduras using fake accounts or misrepresenting themselves to sway public opinion. Here are Craig Silverman, Ryan Mac and Pranav Dixit of BuzzFeed:
“In the three years I’ve spent at Facebook, I’ve found multiple blatant attempts by foreign national governments to abuse our platform on vast scales to mislead their own citizenry, and caused international news on multiple occasions,” wrote Zhang, who declined to talk to BuzzFeed News. Her LinkedIn profile said she “worked as the data scientist for the Facebook Site Integrity fake engagement team” and dealt with “bots influencing elections and the like.” [..]
The memo is a damning account of Facebook’s failures. It’s the story of Facebook abdicating responsibility for malign activities on its platform that could affect the political fate of nations outside the United States or Western Europe. It’s also the story of a junior employee wielding extraordinary moderation powers that affected millions of people without any real institutional support, and the personal torment that followed.

These Anchor shows, as the legitimate creators point out, are completely unaffiliated with the real podcasts, yet they seem to be distributing the same audio content and potentially making money off the original creators’ work. Mignano says the copycats are an unexpected consequence of fast growth and novel attack methods.
The copycats, Mignano says, found a workaround in Anchor’s detection system. “This is definitely a new type of attack for Anchor,” he says. The people who uploaded these copycat shows downloaded the audio from another source, manually reuploaded it to Anchor, and filled in the metadata, essentially making it appear to be a new podcast.

iOS doesn’t need to be more like Android, it just needs more Google
Even though I’ve used several Android handsets over the years, I’ve always stuck with an iPhone. For one thing, I’m so invested in the ecosystem at this point (I’ve purchased many apps, several of which are iOS-only) that switching to another platform would be too painful.
But the main reason that I still have an iPhone, despite the many advantages of Android, is simply force of habit. Its interface, design language and keyboard feel so much like second nature that I can’t get used to anything else. This is a huge reason why Android’s widgets and home screens simply don’t appeal to me: I just never saw the need for them. Even now, after I’ve installed iOS 14, I haven’t bothered adding a widget or cleaning up my home screen, because I just like it the way it is. I suspect many other iOS users feel the same.
For me, the main benefit that Android has over iOS has never been its design or its interface or anything like that. The main advantages with Android, in my view, are the features. Specifically, its compatibility with Google’s apps and services. That’s because, as much as I like iOS, Google is the world in which I live. I use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps, Google Photos and Chrome literally every day. I find Google services easier and more pleasant to use, and I like that it all syncs together. The fact that Android comes with Gmail, Chrome and all the usual Google services by default, working seamlessly with a single sign-on, is great.
That hasn’t been the case with iOS, and one can certainly understand why. Apple obviously wants you to use its own apps and services over the competition. Sure, third-party apps like Gmail and Chrome have been around for a few years now but there were always certain restrictions. The biggest hassle is that tapping on an email link in an app or in Safari would often kick me over the default Apple Mail app rather than Gmail (If you tapped on an email link in the Chrome app, it does let you go to Gmail however). Now, thanks to iOS 14, this is no longer a problem.
Of course, it’s likely that Apple isn’t allowing this in iOS 14 out of the goodness of its heart. Instead, it could be a tactical move. The company is already facing serious antitrust scrutiny as well as accusations that it holds an App Store monopoly, partially due to the 30 percent commission it charges developers (This is the basis of Epic’s recent legal battle with Apple). Perhaps, by ceding ground on default iOS apps, Apple could be heading off concerns that it holds a monopoly over that at the very least. It is not unlike when Microsoft was forced to unbundle Internet Explorer from Windows in 2009 due to European regulations.
Be that as it may, this could be a sign of greater things to come. It’s given me a glimmer of hope that other Google apps, like Calendar and Maps for example, could be given the default treatment too. Of course, there are many things that Android still does better than iOS, such as managing notifications, app permission handling, Live Transcribe, the ability to sideload apps not from an App Store, and more. But if all I get is greater access to Google’s apps and services while still keeping the phone I like, I’d be happy.
The first two Metal Gear Solid games are back on PC, but they are not looking their best
After being MIA for nearly two decades on PC, Windows gamers will have the chance to experience the first two Metal Gear Solid games on their rigs. The two classics from Hideo Kojima’s critically acclaimed series are coming to GOG.com today.
Of course, this isn’t the first time each game has been released on PC; both would see a release on Windows PCs around two years after each initially launched on their respective consoles. But neither game has seen a re-release on digital storefronts like Steam in the years since.
Unfortunately, they look a little rough on modern hardware (more so the first game). I would go into more detail, but I will let the screenshots speak for themselves:
In my opinion, this probably isn’t the best way to experience these classic titles. If you want to play the original Metal Gear Solid, I suggest playing Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, a remake released exclusively on the GameCube. (It’s not going to be cheap, though.)
If you are looking for a better version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, unfortunately, it did not receive an HD rerelease, but there is an HD version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which is available in both the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (the Xbox 360 version, which is also backwards compatible on Xbox One, by the way) or Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection (a PS3-exclusive compilation of all the main installments from the Metal Gear Solid series). Still, that compilation only includes the original PS1 version of Metal Gear Solid, not the GameCube remake.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is an expanded version of Sons of Liberty, the original moniker for the second installment in the MGS series. Substance added lots of new features not found in the original version, including new cutscenes, improved thermal goggles, and 500 new standalone missions.
In addition to Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance coming to PC, GOG.com has also added the original Metal Gear, plus Konami Collector’s Series, a compilation that includes Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Contra, and Super C.
Animal Crossing amiibo cards are coming back
The easiest way to get an Animal Crossing: New Horizons villager to move into your town is to have its amiibo card, except that for the longest time, finding these digital cards in the U.S. at a reasonable price was impossible. After all, most of the cards that were in circulation were released during the Animal Crossing: New Leaf period. Fortunately, Nintendo is bringing those older amiibo cards back.
Starting in November, Amiibo cards series 1-4 can be purchased at retailers for $5.99 per pack. The cards are random and come in packs of six. For reference, getting a single bootleg amiibo coin on places like Etsy can cost around $10, while older legit packs on eBay could go for two-to-four times the retail price. Many people opted to simply make their own fake amiibo cards, but the price of the raw materials went up due to high demand as well. So, assuming Nintendo prints enough cards this time, the amiibo card market should get considerably cheaper and more stable than before, especially now that the New Horizons fervor has died down a bit.
Series 1-4 includes a wide variety of characters, like Isabelle and Tom Nook, along with villagers, and even some characters who aren’t currently available in New Horizons. You can take a look at the full list here. Earlier this year, Nintendo printed another batch of amiibo cards for Japan.
