Megan Rapinoe, the Midfielder for OL Reign and a two-time winner of the World Cup, is now opting-out from the NWSL or the National Women’s Soccer League. This move would take place from the start of the fall series in the upcoming month, as confirmed by a franchise based in Washington on Monday.
No particular reason was provided for the decision taken by Rapinoe. However, the 35-year-old sportsperson also happened to skip the Challenge Cup Tournament by NWSL held in the month of June. This game was played within stadiums that were empty due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
The 2020 fall series features a total of 9 teams that are divided into 3 regional pods, including Northeast, South, as well as West. There would be a total of 4 games played over a term of 7 weeks. However, the final formal hasn’t been announced as of now.
In order to replace its regular old league season, the NWSL went on to schedule the fall series as well as Challenge Cup. The COVID pandemic led to the cancellation of the league season to avoid any possibility of cross-infection among the fans.
