Retired British professional boxer and the longest-reigning cruiserweight champion of all time, Johnny Nelson, recently appeared in an interview where he talked about his comeback to boxing and gave his thoughts on the Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr. bout.
After diffusing the rumors of his comeback, stating he is not interested, Nelson, then talked about the upcoming exhibition bout between the former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and former four-weight boxing world champion Roy Jones Jr.
“You know Tyson and Roy Jones, I think even those boys realized it’s a great idea but actually getting down to it and doing it, is actually a lot harder than the real thing.
“Because it hurts, you can’t get over injuries, you’re not as fit as you used to be, especially if you used to be a brilliant fighter. And then you can nowhere near, reach the heights,” Nelson said.
As Nelson mentioned, age will definitely play a role going into this bout. Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. are way past their physical prime. They definitely cannot perform and move as they did back in their day.
Why is there still so much hype for Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr.?
Although Jones has been very much active in the ring till 2018, he isn’t the same world champion Jones that we know. And Tyson, no matter how good he looks in his training videos, he will definitely face a certain amount of ring-rust going into this bout.
But both fighters do not have to be at their best to sell the tickets, as the anticipation for this bout is high regardless of how old they are.
The date was initially set for September 12. It has now been shifted to November 28 to ensure maximum revenue from the event.
This means that even if both fighters are now a shadow of their former selves, their ability to bring in box-office collections hasn’t deteriorated. The simple fact that we get to see them in the ring together is exciting enough to buy the tickets.
